"What A Supervisor Should Know" Handbook Series

Published by the Dartnell Corp of London & Chicago (from the mid-60s thru 1970s), this series is dated yet still provides interesting reading, some timeless anecdotes, amusing stories, history lessons, sage quotes from leaders and organizations as well as insights on many best business practices still used today. Despite the use of sexist language (today), these easy reading handbooks should be seen as more than just a succinct source of information and good archival material -- they offer up some good laughs too.

1. How to Delegate Effectively (23 pages, Raymond Dreyfack). Theodore Roosevelt once said: "The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done; and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. 2. Building Morale (23 pages). Morale has no substitute. It is the most important single factor influencing job satisfaction and output.

3. Employee Relations (24 pages, E.F. Wells). "To be worthy of management responsibility, a man must have insight into the human heart, for unless he has an awareness of human problems, a sensitivity toward the hopes and aspirations of those he supervises, and a capacity for analysis of the emotional forces that motivate .. The projects entrusted to him will not get ahead - no matter how often wages are raised," Clarence B. Randall.

4. Improving Communication Skills (23 pages, Georgette McGregor). With "studies showing supervisors spend 75 per cent or 30 hours out of every 40-hour work week of their municating ... and just 10 hours carrying out activities," communication skills remain a key ingredient to success, highlighted by this quote from Edwin Locke, Jr., "Companies today give increasing weight to the ability municate effectively as a test of a man's executive potential." ** Yours for $5 **

5. Writing Reports (24 pages, Howard Stephenson). Report writing is so much more than just collecting facts and writing a good report!

6. ing Resistance to Change (23 pages, S.E. Stevens). Perhaps the ancient Greek philopsher, Heraclitus, found adjusting easier than others for he was first to say, "There is nothing permanent except change." And, on change, this from the Royal Bank of Canada: "Points by which to check the probable value of change: Will it increase production, improve quality, add safety, prevent waste, provide better working conditions, reduce cost or eliminate unnecessary work? 7. Reducing Turnover (24 pages, Ken Allen). "The majority of turnovers are caused directly or indirectly from supervisor ings." And this bit of wisdom from a Royal Bank of Canada newsletter: "Routine, repetitive work can be made satisfactory if the worker can be assured that someone in authority recognizes the importance of his work ... It may be advisable, on occasion, to give even more credit than is due, and to take notice of good intentions as well as good performance."
