Since 1775, every piece of porcelain that has left Royal Copenhagen carries its factory marks; the three waves, the royal crown and the painter's mark. These are symbols of authenticity, the royal connection and the mark of handcraftsmanship.
THE THREE BLUE WAVES When the Dowager Queen Juliane Marie founded the Royal Porcelain Factory in 1775, she insisted that the three waves should be the factory's trademark. The waves symbolise Denmark's three most important bodies of water; the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. To this day, the waves are painted on the back of each piece of porcelain prise Royal Copenhagen's well-known signature of authenticity, a mark of fine craftsmanship and Danish porcelain art. It takes four years to learn the craft of painting on Royal Copenhagen porcelain. And although it may be difficult for a layperson to distinguish one Blue Fluted Plain design from another, plished painters always know their own work, as they know their own personal handwriting. Each painter had (and still has) their own stamp, marked on the bottom of every piece of porcelain.
The Christmas plates from Royal Copenhagen have been issued every year since 1908, each one with a unique motif. The stories that unfold on each Royal Copenhagen collectible are also tales of a deep love for the unique tradition in great craftsmanship. Each motif is meticulously brought to life through hundreds of little grooves, carvings and engravings that require the artist to plete mastery of the craft. In fact, of all the products in Royal Copenhagen’s line, our collectibles are made with some of the most demanding and advanced manufacturing techniques. It is the only way to bring a great story to life.
Every year we pass tells a unique tale. Throughout the years, Royal Copenhagen collectibles have told tales about war and peace, love and unforgettable moments. Like the little girl feeding swans by the lakes in Copenhagen. Or the kneeling angel from 1945, marking the end of World War II. Each product tells a story, and from the moment you hold it in your hand, it es part of your story too. Perhaps you bought your first collectible the year you met the love of your life, and another one the year you first became a parent. Or perhaps you own the entire series of collectibles.
SINCE 1908 The relief for the motif of the Royal Copenhagen Collectibles is handmade by the most talented modelling artists based on the designer’s drawing, and the plates are produced with utmost respect for the proud tradition of the craft.
1958-Sunshine Over Greenland, 1968-The Last Umiak, 1969-In The Old Farmyard, 1970-Christmas Rose and Cat, 1972-In The Desert.
