I have For Sale a very nice pair of Vintage JBL 4311B Studio control monitors that are in great condition and need a good home. I hate to part with them but I will be moving soon (downsizing) and they need a new owner. (I have owned them since the seventies) They have been lightly used over the years and I doubt you’ll find many in this condition anymore. Speaker stands are included in sale. I had them apart and replaced the tweeters with some LE25-4’s that I had purchased on line. The crossovers capacitors were replaced while I was in there (simply because of their age) and also cleaned up the L-pods and re-did the black paint on the cabinets. One of the grills cracked at the weakest point on both sides of 1 grill and I stapled/taped it back together and the repair is not visible when in place (I just remove the grills from the Velcro “gently”) I noticed one of the L-pods seemed a bit burnt but it seems to work fine.

Some quotes from articles I’ve read about 4311B monitors are: “While you could go out and buy the new 70th anniversary JBL 4312 SE for $2.5 K, the original 4311B from the 1970’s is a professional monitor that was built to last. On average, they sold for about $350 a piece back in the day….which translates to around $2K for a pair in 2018 dollars making these ,although used, quite a bargain.” “The 4311 was built ground up to be a “studio” monitor with walnut finished cabinets, 12 inch 2213 cast-frame woofers with 3-inch voice coil and a beefy 6.5 pound magnet structure; the 1.4-inch cone/dome tweeter had a foam surround to reduce diffraction effects; and an easy access front panel with “Presence and Brilliance” controls. But the 4311 had one feature not found on any of JBL’s home speakers: Offering tightly ponents that provided coherent imaging when the speakers were used for in close-in listening, the 4311 was ideal for near-field applications such as meter bridge placement.” “In the late 1960s JBL introduced two monitors which helped secure them pre-eminence in the industry. The 4320 was a petitor to the Altec 604 but was a more accurate and powerful speaker and it quickly made inroads against the industry standard. However, it was the pact 4310 that revolutionized monitoring by introducing the idea of close or "nearfield" monitoring. (The sound field very close to a sound source is called the "near-field." By "very close" is meant in the predominantly direct, rather than reflected, sound field. A near-field speaker is pact studio monitor designed for listening at close distances (3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 m)), so, in theory, the effects of poor room acoustics are greatly reduced.) “The 4310 was small enough to be placed on the recording console and listened to from much closer distances than the traditional large wall-(or "soffit") mounted main monitors. As a result, studio-acoustic problems were minimized. Smaller studios found the 4310 ideal and that monitor and its successor, the 4311, became studio fixtures throughout the 1970s. Ironically, the 4310 had been designed to replicate the sonic idiosyncrasies of the Altec 604 but in a smaller package to cater for the technical needs of the time. “The 4311 was so popular with professionals that JBL introduced a domestic version for the burgeoning home-audio market. This speaker, the JBL L-100, (or "Century") was a massive success and became the biggest-selling hi-fi speaker ever within a few years. By 1975, JBL overtook Altec as the monitor of choice for most studios. .
