This book tells the story of the first group of German-speaking immigrants to Canada and of the two remarkable churches they built on Brunswick Street in Halifax. The rectors and the men and women of the parish took leading roles in coping with victims of the Titanic disaster and the Halifax Explosion. Young men won civic and provincial sporting trophies and both sexes entertained the troops with theatrical productions and social occasions during both World Wars. The congregation celebrated ing of Halley’et in the 19th century and a visit by Prince Charles and Princess Diana during the 20th century.
When a devastating fire damaged St. George’s on June 2, 1994, people across the continent from all denominations and all walks of life responded with donations for the restoration of this rare architectural treasure. Today these two National Historic Sites stand as witnesses to the ingenuity and faith of a band of German pioneers and their successors. The book is heavily illustrated with archival and contemporary drawings, engravings and photographs, from formal portraits of bishops to candid scenes of work.
The book is a softcover, and is larger-format, measuring about 9 x 12 inches. It was published in Halifax in 2003. It is 256 pages long, with an index, bibliography, and tons of photographs & illustrations. Book is used, but in good condition - no writing, no stains or soiling, clean cover & tight spine. (There is a crease across the back cover – see scan).
