Part of the ESII series which started with the TA-8650, TA-N5550, TA-5650, TA-4650, TAE-8450, TAN-8550 and which would be carried over to many later units such as the TA-N7B masterpiece, the ST-A7B masterpiece, the TA-E7B or even the PCM-1 ! MOS-FET front end, 4-gang varicap, LEC transistors, an "pensator" inherited from the TA-8650 powerhouse, three pairs of loudspeaker terminals and Dolby patibility. It also has an external adapter function that confuses many users. You can basically use it to add amp/pre-amp separation if you want some auxiliary audio customization.

Google search gave these quotes:
"I bought a STR-6800SD a few weeks ago and am very impressed with its sound! Holy cow Batman, this receiver is beautiful. I consider myself to be an amature stereo buff, not a audiophile. It sure has tone definition. It just slices and dices every instrument and vocal up if you have good enough supporting equipment to do its abilities justice. It is a pretty amazing piece of equipment in that regard. I have owned a number of other vintage 70’s receivers in the last couple of years by Yamaha, Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui. Frankly this one puts them all in the ditch, although I am still partial to may Sansui receivers. I also have 3 other Sonys-STR-V3, V4, V5. It is better than the V5 with its torroidal amp. I could never have afforded this back in the day when it was made between 1976-78. At $600, it was a small fortune, but worth every dime!"
"80 watts-per-channel of pristine Darlington audio output; dx-quality audiophile F.M. section; two phono pre-amps; extremely flexible functionality"
"Whoever designed these Sony classics should be immortalized, along with the Sony ICF-2010's engineer!"
"Hooked it up to two sets of vintage Pioneer speakers (a set of CS-88a and a set of CS-33a routed through a Realistic 40-4050 passive subwoofer). All I can say is wow. Rich, deep sound, reminiscent of a tube amplifier. You wont even need the loudness switch. My CS-88s have never sounded better. If you like Jazz, Classical, or even 60's acid rock, this is a great receiver to match with that music."
"..it sounds wonderful. The tuner in particular is excellent. The dial lamps are european automotive bulbs BTW.. Auto parts stores carry them."
"I love this receiver! It's pre-remote and home theater but the power and clarity is absolutely amazing."
"When playing vinyl, it has an almost haunting tonal quality to it, especially when you play the blues or blues rock. Its sound is similar to my Sony STR-V5 or should I say the V5's tone is similar to the STR-6800SD? The STR-V5 came in the next generation. This one may have a better sound than the V5 or the 6800 may just be in better condition. Both are great receivers"
