Salt Cellars, Sterling Silver, J.M. Banks, England - NEW PRICE

A pair of sterling silver, antique, salt cellars with matching sterling silver spoons. Hallmarks indicate that the caldron-style cellars were made by James M. Banks in Birmingham, England, in 1888. The spoons were made nine years later in 1897 by William H. Stokes and Arthur G. Ireland, also of Birmingham. Interestingly, the Stokes & Ireland Ltd. spoons were assayed in Chester, England, rather than in Birmingham, due to a backlog of assay work in the latter city in the last few years of the 19th century. The two cellars and 2 spoons weigh a total of 1.8 oz. The cellars are 1 5/8 inches in diameter and rest on 3 spherical feet each. The spoons are 2 5/8 inches long and are elegantly crafted. The cellars and spoons are clear of any dings or bends. Patina mensurate with their 130 year age. I have not been able to find any salt cellars made by J.M. Banks matching these on the internet. This suggests that this style may be rare. Reason for selling is that they are surplus to our needs. The set was inherited from ancestors but we do not know if members of our family were the original purchasers. Dark areas in photos are reflection of the table.
