“From White-caps to Contrails: A History of a Modern Air Formation”
Edited by Colonel E. Ian Patrick This Canadian Air Force history was written on the occasion of the presentation of a new set of colours to the five different squadrons that were based at Shearwater, (near Halifax) N.S. in 1981. The book looks at the history of each squadron from their formations during the Second World War, through to the 1980s when they were all based at Canadian Forces Base Shearwater on the Atlantic Coast. Many photos, recollections of veterans, details of ops, and so on, in war and cold war. The squadrons covered are: Royal Canadian Air Force, Squadron 406, Squadron 32, Squadron 443, Squadron 880, and Squadron 443. When they were first organized, the men from these formations flew Hurricanes and Spitfires, Mosquitos, Lancasters and other heavy bombers, and so on. Through the cold War they flew off carriers, used Sabre jets, did anti-submarine patrol, and through to 1980 were flying Grumman "Trackers," Sea Kings and other helicoptors, and a variety of other craft. This book tells the whole history, and since it was issued for the ceremonial moment of new colours (presented by the Gov General) it is quite a scarce memento.
The book is a hardcover, bound in blue cloth with gold embossed title on the spine & crests on the cover. It also has a dustjacket. It was published in Shearwater in 1981 (although, it is long out of print). It is 110 pages long, and also includes many photos, including some in colour. It is large format, measuring about 11 x 9 inches. The book is used, but is in quite good condition. There is a former owner's name, but otherwise no writing, no stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages, and a tight spine & clean dustjacket.
