If you started a Red Wiggler worm bin today, you would have some fresh loamy, "Black Gold" castings to use in your garden or houseplants in as little as 2 - 2 1/2 months! VERMI WORM sells you a 500 ml container with 100+ healthy Red Wigglers (mature breeders, juveniles and cocoons) lightly packed in their own bin's mature post which will inoculate your new sterile worm bin with all the beneficial bacteria, fungi and microorganisms to get your post started, that's right 100 Red Wigglers plus 500ml of "active" bedding for only $10. each! When you buy worms online, the worm castings and post are removed and a lighter shipping bedding (usually sterile peat moss) is added, at the expense of you losing out on all that "life" that was in the post/castings the worms were living in. When you post worms in sterile bedding, it takes a good month if not more for the worms to settle in and the eco system to start. I sell my Red's right in their own mature post and put it in the container with the Reds you are buying so that it will activate your new bin, the worms stay put and start working right away as they brough part of their "home" with them. Simply feed the Red Wigglers your kitchen scraps and watch the bin's bedding (carbon/browns) turn into beautiful castings for your plants and garden. Worm bins are odorless if kept correctly, if the bin gets a bit smelly, which is always from overfeeding, you just need to sprinkle some Calcium Carbonate on it, and fluff a bit, and the smell will go away. Worm bins make a great family project with lots of "how to" videos on YouTube. Is all you need to get started are some Vermi Wormi Red Wigglers, a Rubbermaid tote with a lid, or a purchased worm bin/farm of any brand, some bedding and food scraps, and a drill to make oxygen holes in the bin. You will need to make the worms "bedding" from any or all of the following type of shredded browns(carbon): (paper/carboard/leaves/brown bags, junk mail,/peat moss,/egg cartons/coconut coir/ wood shavings, aged manure...) . You will need unchlorinated water to make the bedding moist. You can use tap water if you let it sit in a container for a few days. Then you put the unchlorinated water into the bedding, let sit 15 mins, then squeeze the water out till it feels like a damp sponge, then fluff the bedding up with your hands so that it has lots of oxygen flow. If you have access post add a handful but you do not need to add any type of soil at all. Composting worms are epigeic worms meaning they live above the soil NOT in it, nor do they consume it...earthworms do that. In the wild Red Wigglers live above the soil in the leaf litter consuming organic posing material. Back to the worm bin.... then add your container/s of Vermi Wormi Red Wigglers, and let the Red Wigglers find their own way into the bin. Make sure to check the container and clean it out well in case little baby worms are tucked into the crevices somewhere. : ) If using a Rubbermaid tote as a worm bin, I mend starting with at least 300 Red Wigglers. Wait about 1 week before feeding, as this gives them time to get used to the bin, and settle in. Add a wormie blanket, which is simply a moistened piece of newspaper, old cotton tshirt, burlap, and place over the top of the bedding. The worms will eventually consume the wormie blanket as well, as they will consume almost anything organic. Adding a piece of cardboard over the damp worm blankie will make it nice and dark for your worms, and then put the lid on. You now are a worm farmer!! Be patient, and your Red's will do what they do best, multiply, eat and make worm castings. Red Wigglers don't have teeth, so they slurp up posing organic matter, then hold the food in their crop (which is like a storage tank) then the food empties into their gizzard to grind up their food using the gizzard's muscles and grit (little pieces of sand, pulverized egg shells, oyster shell which has to be added to their food, and should be added to the bedding in a new bin. Some posters use eggshells (I used to, but it is a lot of work!), as the eggshells have to be blended down to a fine powder, resembling flour in consistency. Having Calcium Carbonate on hand is much easier, as you add 1 tbsp each time you feed, and add 1/4 cup to mix into the moist bedding of a new bin/tray. Calcium Carbonate is pricey for the small amount you will need for a worm bin, so I SELL 300 g of CALCIUM CARBONATE in upcycled containers for only $3/each. This will be enough Calcium Carbonate to last 1 or 2 worm bins from the beginning to the harvesting stage. I highly mend buying at least 1 container of our Calcium Carbonate 300g for only $3. Calcium Carbonate has a lot to offer a worm bin, as it provides grit for the gizzard and for the worm's digestive system, it supplements the Red Wigglers Calciferous glands that aid in digestion, reproduction and the making of cocoons, since the Red's eat kitchen scraps the bedding can e acidic on the pH scale, a worm bin should run as close to Neutral (7) on the pH scale. Calcium Carbonate also acts as a pH Buffer helping bringing any acidic conditions back up from acidic to Neutral. You can simply sprinkle it over the food. I suggest folks put it in a shaker like a salt or pepper shaker. Red Wigglers are an excellent high source of protein and loads of minerals, and awesome Omega fats which makes a great as a live, high protein food source for chickens, quails, pond fish, goldfish, fish, turtles, bearded dragons, axolotls and many other pets. The great thing about Red Wigglers as a live food source is that you can start a worm bin and only have the initial cost of the worms, and your hobby's "feed" bill will disappear.
