This enormous book was published as a catalogue to pany a gallery show of the same name that was presented by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto in 1980. The exhibit, like the book, was entitled “Printmaking in Canada: The Earliest Views and Portraits” and was Edited/Curated by Mary Allodi, who is an expert in Canadian art history. The book covers the history of the print / engraving in Canada, from the Army artists in Montreal at the fall of Quebec, through the 18th century in Halifax, then Upper Canada, the Maritimes & Nova Scotia, and right through the 19th Century. The show posed of 104 items, and the book reproduces each of them, usually with a full-page plate, as well as a very extensive write-up giving details of the image, the artist, date, and so on. There is also a very long and detailed Introduction, telling about the state of the art in Canada, engravers & artists, dealers, and so on. A prehensive look at early Canadian art, and a must-have for the Canadian art historian, engraver, etc…

The book is a softcover printed on glossy pages. It is large format, and measures about 10 x 12 inches, and is just packed with photos and illustrations. It is 244 pages long, and was published in Toronto in 1980 (though it is long out of print). The book is used, but is in good condition – there is no writing, no stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages, and it still has a tight spine & clean cover.
