The sound quality of SX680 is very close to that of SX780 (best selling stereo receiver of all time), just less power. It will be tested for local Ottawa area buyer at the front door/porch with FM, CD player, turntable and speakers, keeping distance.
MSRP = USD $300 = CAD $375 in 1979 = CAD $1306 in 2021; that's how much it would sell for if made new today. Makes for a great alternative to vintage Marantz and Sansui; pare, Marantz 1060 = $200 in 1977
Maintenance service done 10/2021:
Basic 2-hrs maintenance service done 08/2021: * Dusted off, cleaned and detailed in and out; * All controls deoxed/lubed using pro grade D100/F5/G5 cleaners ($124/3 cans); * Lamps replaced with new matched; * DC offset is below 15 mV, both channels, which is excellent; * Bias and DC offset are not adjustable on SX680; the bias voltages are set in real time by the circuit, to pensate for load, volume and temperature changes; * The amp runs lukewarm as it should, not hot, not cold; * Fully tested, all inputs * New cherry veneer installed; the original extra thin peeling veneer is the only weak spot for SX580, SX680 and SX780; they all start to peel, first small pieces and then all of es off as time goes by; it's just a matter of time.
In the late 70's, Pioneer launched a series of audiophile grade receivers, that proved to be the most successful series in the history of stereo equipment. The SX-580, SX-680 and SX-780 all share the same straightforward circuit design, they all use Darlington packs as output modules, and they sound the same, very sweet yet transparent, the only difference is in power output. Still, at normal listening level (1 Watt output) it's impossible to tell, which model is which. I don't mention SX-880, SX-980, SX-1080 and SX-1280 here, because those models were built differently, and sound different as well, more powerful, but not as intimate (it's easier to preserve low level signals dealing with low power designs, not so with high power amps). This is the reason why many classic 15 to 30 wpc receivers from Marantz, Sansui and Pioneer are highly sought after. They all offer amazing value.
