This turntable is semi-automatic. To start play, you raise the tonearm over the record (which starts the turntable rotating). Then lower the tonearm manually to place the needle onto the record. At the end of the record, the player automatically returns the tonearm to the cradle and turns the turntable off. The tracking force / stylus pressure can be adjusted with the tonearm counterweight. Anti-skating can also be adjusted with the anti-skating dial / knob.

Tone Arm Precision Ground Super-Hard carbon-Chromium Bearings in Tone Arm Support Pioneer uses precision-ground bearings of extra hard carbon-chromium steel in the vertical bearing assembly for the tone arm support in the PL-514. You enjoy unusually high tone arm sensitivity - that all-important factor in accurate record-groove tracing - not only when your turntable is new, but after years of use.
