Description: Beautiful pair of Brutalist mid-century modern vintage walnut night stands / end tables. {Belle paire de tables de chevet / tables de chevet en noyer vintage du milieu du siècle brutaliste.} Beautifully crafted from walnut wood. The style is Canadian brutalist and the designer and manufacturer is likely Tabago.

This striking pair of bedsides is a case study in grand proportions, high-quality construction and beautiful materials. We love the highly-textured, brutalist era pattern which adorns the front facades. It's a timeless mid-century design which offers character to a contemporary space.

Each has a two-door cabinet with shelves. One shelf in one cabinet and two in the other – all being moveable. The body is made of walnut veneer over particle board. The door fronts are adorned with decorative solid hardwood pieces. Fiberboard back board. Made in Canada in 1979.

A beautiful pair of vintage, impressive and sleek mid-century modern walnut nightstands or end tables, circa early 1960s. Features square top above double cabinet doors opening to reveal one or two adjustable shelves, all resting on a plinth base. Practical as they are beautiful with spacious interiors, and beautiful arch design into the façade of the cabinet doors. They are a beautiful pair of matched cabinets for a bedroom but are also perfectly suited for living room, making them a wonderful addition to any mid-century modern décor.

"Black walnut currently accounts for less than 1 percent of the hardwood production in the US. It represents about 2 per­cent of the total US mercially available, and of course much, much less in Canada. It is estimated that most walnut logs only yield 20 percent select boards, as knots are mon in sawn boards." "Black walnut is one of the most valuable domestic hardwood species and is of prime importance as a timber tree. In Canada the supply is almost exhausted, so most of our black walnut es from the US. Select US black walnut wood is expensive, and generally it is the highest priced domestic hardwood in North America. Due to overharvesting, the availability of high quality black walnut has diminished. "

Condition: Good vintage condition (7 / 10). Construction is strong and sturdy. Mostly structurally sound. Minor chips and scratches to veneer and solid wood pieces. Minor circle mark on one cabinet. No veneer bubbling. Original finish. Overall very good surface condition, with some scratches and minor veneer chips.

Repairs have been made to underside of cabinets (not visible unless you flip them over). May require reinforcing of structural repairs made in the past to the underside of the cabinet box where it meets the plinth base.

Mid century modern Canadian furniture maker Tabago Furniture Ltd has left a lasting legacy of striking, graphic and highly unique work, and is responsible for creating some of the most bold and ambitious Canadian furniture of the 1960's . For pany that has crafted some of the most memorable mcm furniture it's surprising that very little is known about its history or designers. Most Tabago Furniture isn't stamped with a makers label, only 'Made in Canada', so it can be difficult to identify. Also the furniture was promoted and sold into the American market so is often assumed to be made by an pany.

Tabago furniture designs are often described as brutalist in style but likely take a lot of inspiration from the graphic art craft aesthetic of progressive mid century American designers like Paul Evans and Phillip Lloyd Powell. The designs range from highly geometric external motifs to softer organic forms with a Scandinavian influence, each design has it's own distinct personality.

After reviewing some of the prominent Canadian furniture and interior design publications of the 1970's it seems that Tabago Furniture was set up in Quebec the early 1970's and was in operation until the mid 1980's. In 1974 Tabago set up a permanent presence in High Point, North Carolina, which at the time was known as 'the furniture capital of the world'. Here pany would have been exposed to some of the most progressive designers and furniture makers including Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin.

While established in High Point, Tabago worked closely with four other premium Canadian furniture makers to promote and celebrate Canadian design. These furniture makers were Impact 2000, Rougier, R.S. and Treco. The advert in Decormag proudly proclaims that "these firms are considered to be leaders in the design field in Canada, having won no less than 52 Furniture Trophies since the creation of these awards in 1966".

Due to the lack of information available, it seems that Tabago brutalist furniture is often mistakenly named 'Tobago' furniture on mid century design websites like 1stdibs and Chairish.
