Antique / vintage Globe Wernicke grade 295 oak barrister / lawyer / sectional / elastic bookcase {bibliotheque notaire} 3 tiers 5 parts c1900s
Description: Solid oak {chene} base and legs, window frames, and sides. Oak veneer on sides and top. Interiors of the tiers partments are maple or birch. Plywood backing boards with veneer interiors. Top surface appears to be plywood with veneer top and bottom. X-shaped (scissor-like) flat steel door window sliding guides (equalizers). Square tapered legs.
The following are the parts: base, 3 partment / tiers, and top. Glass doors cover tiers, but can be slid up to access interior of the tier, which is great for keeping dust off of contents. The five parts are held together by gravity and interlocking parts, e apart easily for ease of transport. Brass coloured metal straps on tier sides.
The top features a distinctive rounded look, commonly referred to as waterfall, ogee, or rolltop. The sections have metal strips (often called “straps”) that cover the joints between the sections, and also serve to lock one stack to another stack next to it. These straps are finished in what GW called an “oxidized” finish. Knobs are typically made of brass.
The Globe-Wernicke Co. Ltd. was built in Stratford, ON in 1903 and manufactured modular bookcases starting soon thereafter until about 1950. They were mon as office furniture. Later GW units have labels that list “size” and “grade”, where the size is given as “depth-inside height” (for example: C-9 1/2, D-10 1/4), and grade refers to the finish.
Canadian made by Globe Wernicke Co. and sold by F.X. Valiquette, Montreal, QC. Red paper tags on inside back of all 3 tiers: Manufactured by The Globe-Wernicke Co. Ltd. 295, Stratford, Ont., Grade 295, Sizes: D 8 ½; D 10 ¼; D 12 ½
One black and gold paper tag: Meubles, tapis, prelarts, etc., F.X. Valiquette et Cie., coin Pie IX et Ste-Catherine, Maissoneuve.
Dimensions: 34” Wide x 51” High x 12.25” Deep. Three sizes of tiers with effective interior heights of 8.5”; 10.25” and 12.5”
Condition: Overall very good vintage condition (8.0 / 10). Structurally sound, except for two corners of the window door frames. All joinery tight. No cracks in glass. Three tiers, all with working sliding glass covered doors. The interior of partments are sound. Plywood backing boards all in sound condition. Superficial water stains to top of bookcase, perhaps from plants. From a smoke free household. Scratches to finish on the inside lower part of each tier on which the books or other objects sit.
Needs minor repairs: A) one wood door frame is loose on two corner, so risk of ing out. This is a relatively simple repair requiring sanding, gluing and clamping the two corners. This was glues and clamped, and now awaiting the results. B) one door slide screw and cover tube is missing, however door still slides with care.
