Description: Beautiful Arts and Crafts style oak {chene} lawyer's barrister’s / sectional / stacking bookcase {bibliothèque avocat notaire}, with 2 book tiers partments, a secretaire / secretary desk section and 2 drawers. Probably built in Canada before 1914. Sturdily built of solid wood, veneer over solid wood and plywood. The finish is a warm reddish-brown. Solid metal pulls on the glass doors and solid metal secretaire hinges, which appear to be the originals. Solid wood pulls on drawers and secretaire desk. Comes apart very easily for transport. Greater depth of the bottom section pared to top. Ogee top and base.
I've been informed that this piece is a Quarter-sawn Oak Humphrey Widman Sectional Secretaire from before 1914, and built in Berlin, Ontario. During of after WWI, Berlin, Ontario became Kitchener.
Separates into five pieces. All levels fit together without removeable fasteners. Wooden ridges hold the different levels together, as they are placed one on top of the other. The pieces are: base with legs and shallow drawer; glass doored partment; secretaire partment with shallow drawer below desk surface; one glass doored partment; and a cap piece. Feet on the base are paw-like.
Sheet metal dust covers on top of partments / tiers. Sliding metal cross pieces on tier tops keep doors in place while opening and closing the doors.
The secretaire partment has nine stationary or letter slots / cubby holes, 2 small drawers and a fold down desk surface. There is a lock, but no key.
Condition: Overall in very good vintage condition (7.5 / 10), and structurally sound. All glass panes are intact. All doors slide easily up and down within partment. All joinery sound and tight. From a smoke free household. Back of plywood backing has no separation or peeling. Some veneer chips on lower section. No insect damage. No manufacturer’s marks or labels. Minor superficial scratches and dings. Water and ink marks on the desk surface. Key missing for secretaire lock.
Would look better with a thorough washing, as photos show dirt and dust.
