When you already have the class-leader in the mid-sized sport-utility market, what's left to do? Step it up and pull even further away from the pack, and Yamaha did just that. For 2003, the Kodiak 450 4x4 rolls off the assembly line in Newnan, Georgia, with all the forts found on the original Kodiak 400, plus additional power, a new differential lock system and a new digital meter that provides a fortable and convenient ride while hunting, fishing, working or just exploring the great outdoors.
Building on the success of Yamaha's On-Command™ push-button 2WD/4WD found on the Kodiak 400, the new 450 4x4 features a three-step On-Command™ system with 4WD locking differential as found on the Grizzly 660 4x4. This allows riders to adjust to the terrain or conditions by simply pushing a button near the right grip. A high- and low-range gearing option allows maximum performance and incredibly easy riding in a variety of riding conditions with the shift of a lever. An easy-to-engage reverse gear makes it simple for riders to get out of tough situations. All of this is conveniently displayed on an integrated digital LCD speedometer, odometer/dual trip meter, hour meter and clock, and differential lock meter.

As for the Kodiak 450's dominating performance, you'll never see this newest bear hibernating, but instead it will explore the trails and hunt hot spots with no difficulty. The larger 421cc SOHC engine has more horsepower and increase in torque and features pact, liquid-cooled 45-degree incline and counterbalancer that provides all the power necessary for exploring and working. A Mikuni BSR33 fires the powerplant to life and provides not only quick throttle response down-low but consistent power throughout the rev range.
The all-new stainless steel exhaust system enables improved power delivery while keeping engine noise to a minimum and greater durability without having to worry about rust.
The Kodiak 450 4x4 also features Yamaha's exclusive, fully automatic Ultramatic™ transmission, utilizing both a centrifugal clutch and a sprag (one-way) clutch behind the primary pulleys. The Ultramatic™ transmission system supplies the Kodiak with superior engine braking, which prevents the ATV from freewheeling when riding down a slope with heavy loads or slowing for a corner.
The Kodiak 450 4x4's fort and convenience features include the choke lever near the left grip, and a waterproof automotive-type DC outlet that can easily power a mobile phone or Global Positioning System (GPS). Full floorboards extending from the front to rear fender and a posh seat offer a fortable ride.
An under seat storage box is large enough to store trail necessities, such as a rope for pulling petitors out of difficult situations. The trailer hitch is both center-mounted and detachable. In addition, the Kodiak offers more than 6.3 inches of travel up front and 7.1 inches in the rear, combining a light feeling and handling with plush suspension.
Nothing is as dependable or strong as Yamaha's bears. Demonstrating superior durability, the Kodiak 450 4x4 boasts a front rack capacity of 88 pounds, rear rack capacity of 176 pounds and towing capacity of 1,102 pounds. Wider front and rear fenders offer increased mud protection; the stainless steel exhaust system offers protection from rust; and a plastic cover over the front bar carry and a powder coated wrinkle finish rack provides increased durability and protection from the elements.
Hydraulic front and rear disc brakes coupled with a class-leading engine-braking system offer plenty of stopping power; while a four-gallon fuel tank means hours of exploring. The longer radiator, positioned high within the frame and behind the front guard, and the Ultramatic air intake system - one-inch higher than on previous Kodiak models - allows the rider to go into deeper water.
