Here he decimates the myth of the magic of contemporary medicine and its adjuncts. He employs for his main analytical tool a term explores its implications to the full: Iatrogenesis, meaning doctor-made illness. This is defined as ‘comprising only illness which ended treatment had been applies.” Relentlessly and with full documentation taken from recognized medical sources he provides the importance of medical services to change life expectancy, the insignificance of most contemporary clinical care in curing disease, the magnitude of medically inflicted damage to health, and the futility of medical and political countermeasures to sick-making medical care. Illich’s deeply shocking analysis into clinical, social and structural iatrogenesis examines culture, health, sickness, pain and suffering and includers an historical examination of the concept and image of death. This s followed by a warning that Medical Nemesis is bound to set in unless the autonomy of the individual is re-established. “Medical Nemesis is more than all clinical iatrogenesis put together, more than the sum of malpractice, negligence, professional callousness, political maldistribution, medically decreed disability and all the consequences of medical trial and error. It is the expropriation of man’s coping ability by a maintenance service which keeps him geared up at the service of the industrial system.” In the final chapter Illich point out an alternative to this breakdown. By recognizing and insisting on essential ingredients of personal health, man can recover his integrity over his body and life. “People need no bureaucratic interference to mate, give birth, share the human condition and die. Man’s consciously lived fragility, individually and integral part of his life. The ability to cope with this trio automatically id fundamentals to his health”
