You've got L/R Gain (volume) controls so you can run either a tuner or CD player puter or iPod directly into it, without preamplifier. It will sound cleanest that way, and you still get a huge wall of sound.

This Marantz will make for a nice high-end puter setup, for a demanding audiophile. Your Terratec, Lynx, Xonar or RME sound card will sound amazingly big and beautiful, like it never did before.

It will be tested for local Ottawa area buyer at the front door with a Denon CD player and nice vintage speakers.

Basic 2 hrs maintenance service done 08/2022: Cleaned and detailed in and out; All controls, pots, connectors deoxed/lubed using pro grade D100/G5/F5 ($119/3 cans); All-new LED lamps installed; DC offset adjusted to below 1 mV, both channels, factory specs; Bias voltages adjusted to 10 mV L/R, as pictured, for best sound/best performance; The amp now runs lukewarm as it should, not hot, not cold. Meters adjusted to factory specs; Tested at full power into dummy load; then tested with 15 inch JBL speakers; sounds clear as a bell.

Power transistors: Top quality Made in U*S*A original matched Fairchild S40442 x2 code 610 + S40443 x2 code 615; Marantz matched transistors in specs for best amp stability and higher power output. Never blown, never repaired.

Best preamp mendations, if you really need one: 3200 (top choice), 1060 integrated used as preamp, 3600, 3300, 3800. Other Marantz or non-Marantz preamps will also work fine, but those are best for matching looks, and perfect impedance/voltages matching.

The Model 140 is essentially an upgraded power amp part of Model 2270, with better power supply regulation and better specs. The Model 140 is a purist's design, zero electrolytic capacitors in the signal path. There are only 2 small caps on each power amp circuit board, but they are part of protection circuit. The power supply circuit board with relay has capacitors, and there's that huge power filter dual cap, but that's not the signal path.

I like them original condition and low mileage, like this one. There are no sonic benefits from recapping 140 or 250 or 250M, other than somewhat increased bass output or perhaps slightly tighter bass, when replacing single dual cap with 2 larger values caps. Yes, that can be done, but will change the original interior looks. The protection circuit and power supply can be recapped in the future, that is useful for long term reliability, if you intend to keep the amp to the next 40-50 years.

The best part about classic Marantz models in nice original condition is the way they appreciate, faster than gold, so if you start to make price offers you will be sent on your way.

Q: "I have 2 marantz 140 amps with a 3200 marantz pre amp. Im going to be running McIntosh ML-2 speakers. I have read so many different things about using both amps that I have no idea what to do. I have read I can use one amp for each channel, or I can use RCA splitters to use both amps.

A: You could use splitters on the pre out jacks. I have a 3200 and I had two 140's at one point. The preamp drove both fine. You may or may not need to adjust the gain controls on the 140's a bit. As Oerets posted they can't be bridged to mono."
