This listing is for a 4/4 violin made in Markneukirchen, Germany in 1910-1912 with a G. S. B. Violin Case. This violin is a copy of the celebrated Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin, beautifully worked out by the artist, L. Ludwig, a man who has given most of his years to violin making. Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (7 October 1798 – 19 March 1875).
The G.S.B. cases are always made of solid wood, either basswood or poplar. It is 110 years old. It has been made Charlestown, New Hampshire’s Fiddle-box Factory, which was doing business before 1880 and continued through many disasters and various owners until 1923, when plete outfit was sold at auction.
This violin has a two-piece back of carefully selected seasoned maple, beautifully figured and flamed. The sides are of maple and the top is made of carefully selected even grain, thoroughly seasoned silver spruce. The neck is made of fine curly maple of perfect measurement, and the scroll is very carefully carved and finished. The model is perfect in every respect. The measurements are correct and such is will give the best possible tone results. The edges are very carefully worked out and the corners shaped, and the purfling inlaid with greatest accuracy. The soundholes are carefully and delicately cut.
Don't forget that the first requisite of a violin is tone, and the tone of a violin depends entirely upon the selection of materials and care with which the details of constriction are carried out. The body of the violin is finished in rich reddish color blending into the natural color of the wood, with edges finished in natural color, covered with a specially prepared Bergamo oil varnish, giving the instrument a dull velvet like appearance, the richness and beauty of which cannot be described. All trimmings are of the best quality jet black ebony wood. The tailpiece and pegs are handsomely carved in fancy design opaque in finish, matching t o perfection the style of instrument. The fingerboard, tailpiece and pegs are genuine ebony. This violin has a rich, strong and harmonious tone which is bound to increase in volume and sweetness with use.
