Depuis l'interdiction des poêles à bois à Montréal, les foyers à l'éthanol sont de plus en plus populaires. Ce sont essentiellement de gros poêles «à fondue» qui peuvent être installés sur un mur ou au centre d'une pièce et qui ne nécessitent aucune cheminée. Utilisés depuis longtemps en Europe, ils sont généralement sécuritaires.
Qu'est-ce que l'éthanol?
L'éthanol utilisé bustible de foyer est un alcool éthylique dénaturé auquel on a ajouté environ 3% de méthanol. En Amérique, l'éthanol est essentiellement fabriqué à partir de maïs, mais ailleurs dans le monde, d'autres me le seigle ou les pommes de terre sont utilisées pour en fabriquer.
Des foyers écologiques?
L'utilisation de champs de culture, d'engrais et de pesticides pour la production d'éthanol destiné à l'exportation peut être désastreuse d'un point de vue écologique et humanitaire. Cependant, l'utilisation occasionnelle d'un foyer alimenté par un éthanol de production locale peut remplacer des foyers au bois polluants dans les condominiums urbains et devenir une solution beaucoup plus écologique et plus saine pour la qualité de l'air des villes.
