Build your own pontoon boat, dock, swim platform, floating picnic table or party barge.
These barrels are approximately 3’ long and 2’ in diameter.
Here are 7 reasons why 55 gallon barrels make better dock floats then mercially available ones ::
1. Barrels are more Rugged – The walls of a typical 55 gallon barrel are TWICE AS THICK as the walls of standard rectangular dock float. A 55 gallon barrel can be beat with a sledge hammer without damage. Do NOT try this on a rectangular dock float!
2. Barrels don’t require Foam Filling – Rectangular dock floats are typically foam filled to keep the walls of the float from collapsing. This increases the weight of the float and If the float ever gets punctured, the foam inside can e water logged with no way to dry it out. Barrels, on the other hand, have a shape that makes them strong without requiring foam filling. If, somehow, they ever get punctured, the water can be easily drained and the hole welded up, returning the float to 100% capacity. (But they will never leak so not an issue).
3. Barrels won’t crush in the Ice – The round shape of a barrel keeps the ice from grabbing hold of it. As the lake freezes, the barrel gets pushed up on top of the ice. When the ice thaws and shifts, the barrels and the dock are not damaged. Rectangular floats will easily crush in the ice.
4. Barrels slide easily across the Ground – The round shape and ruggedness of barrels allow a dock to be easily dragged over sand, gravel, even small rocks. Hook your dock up to your truck, quad, tractor, or skidsteer and drag it up on shore.
5. Barrels sit the dock higher above the Water – A typical dock floating on 55 gallon barrels will sit about 20” above the water where as a dock on rectangular floats will sit only 10-16” depending on the design. A higher floating dock is more in line with pontoon boats and ski boats BUT barrels are unique in that you can always put a bit of water in each to act as ballast to lower your dock if desired. It is easy to achieve the perfect height.
6. Barrels are much less Expensive – Rectangular dock floats can cost anywhere from $160-$250 per float not including shipping. A 55 gallon barrel is only $50 and are easy to find.........right here !!
7. It's great for the environment! You don't have to order these in which means little to no transport or shipping thus reducing emissions. These barrels will be re used and re purposed and last a lifetime so never have to re buy.
8. I know I said 7 reasons but here is one more. Usually neighbour's friends or family see your barrels and realize what a great idea it is so you can let them know all this info, send them our way to buy their barrels and even help them construct theirs - why is this good? Well its the neighbourly thing to do and it usually results in a favor in return or at very least bbq and "adult bevies".
In all seriousness though, barrels really do make sense. A better product for a lot less money!
