The circuits of KR-1400 sound very sweet and easy on ears primarily for 5 reasons:
* Short signal path * Pure DC preamplifier; * Very low global feedback power amp (hence low damping factor); * FET front end; * The build quality that is equal to upper end Kenwood models
There were promises back in 1975 for low end models. Look at the pictures, lots of metal, quality parts, quality wiring; every part of the receiver (preamp, power amp, power supply, tuner) is on its circuit board and separated from each other; the power transformer is fully shielded. All-discrete power transistors, Alps pots/switches, Elna Audio capacitors throughout

It is well known among music lovers that most vintage receivers/amplifiers with small power output transistors in them (technically known as TO-220 transistor package) have sweeter, more involving and often more life-like sound than big guys. This is the reason why, for example, the Marantz 2215B sounds sweeter and overall better than Marantz 2330B. The drawback is the lack of power to control large speakers properly, but stay with smaller, more efficient 8 Ohm speakers and that problem is solved easily.
Basic 2-hrs maintenance service done 12/2022:
* Taken apart, cleaned and detailed in and out; * All controls/connectors/potentiometers deoxed/lubed using pro grade D100/F5/G5 ($126/3 cans); * Lamps replaced with new matched 8V; * Bias current adjusted to 30 mA L/R, factory specs, very important for amp stability and sound quality; * MPX Stereo adjusted for best reception in Stereo; * Reassembled, fully tested
