One authentic antique Kohn bentwood chair available for purchase. This beautiful lightweight classic bistro style chair is made of a medium tone Austrian beech wood with a round wood seat. The seat has a signature thumbprint design. The chair is in excellent condition and still has its original paper labels underneath the seat. The chair was manufactured between 1871-1917. The chair measures 35x16x19 inches (89x40.5x48cm). The seat height is 43cm (17'').

The Bentwood chair was invented by a german-austrian cabinet maker Michael Thonet in the 1850s. When Michael Thonet's patent for the bentwood chair was terminated in 1871, many jumped at the chance to make their own bentwood chairs. Jacob and Josef Kohn of Vienna were THE petitor to the Thonet Brothers. The father-son duo founded pany in 1849. They had a lot of success with a wide array of furniture pieces. By 1876, they were making 500,000 furniture pieces per year! They established offices in Europe, in New York and in Toronto. They revolutionized the furniture industry in 1899 by creating affordable furniture designed by leading architects and artists of the Viennese Art Reform movement. Today the Kohn bentwood chair is part of different museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan museum of art in New York City.
