Note: the dark areas on the brass in the photos are caused by camera flash. All the brass surfaces are in perfect order with no blemishes or marks ). "Trench Art" is a term used to describe objects made from debris and by-products of modern warfare. This industry continued after the war, with Trench Art type objects being created as remembrances and souvenirs of war. This antique solid brass fireplace smudge pot/fire starter pot with a brass handled pumice stone wand was made from a World War II solid brass shell case. On the bottom of the smudge pot/shell case are letters and numbers to identify the shell case. They are as follows: 25 PR, which stands for 90mm calibre RM/C, stands for Robert Mitchell and Co, the maker's mark /C was used on cases made in Canada. Lot 424, stands for the lot number of the empty case CF, stands for the initials of the assembler, Cartoucherie Francaise, a munitions factory in Paris, France 1945, stands for year of manufacture
This is a very unique, special and rare solid brass fireplace smudge pot/fire pot because of its origin and what it is fashioned from. It has a distinctive flared fishtail handle to hold the pot which is very heavy solid brass. The smudge pot/fire pot measures 7" high, 4" in diameter and 5" wide with the handle. The pumice wand/fire starter has a brass shaft with a lovely decorative solid brass detailed handle depicting a medieval dressed gentleman. The pumice wand measures 11 1/4" long. The pumice stone is on a long metal wand and would be soaked in fuel. The smudge pot stores kerosene or lamp oil and sits on the fireplace hearth. When ready to light the fire the saturated pumice wand is placed under the logs. The pumice stone is lit with with a match. The pumice stone will burn approximately 10 minutes, long enough to ignite the logs. Once the wood catches fire the pumice stone is removed and let cool on the hearth, then placed in the pot when it is cool and ready for the next fire. This antique brass smudge pot is as mentioned a rare and very unusual piece as it is made from a 1945 World War II brass shell case.
