Description: Antique elm hardwood barrister bookcase with an exterior dark red-brown and an interior gold-brown finish. Made in the c1920s, likely in Canada or the USA. Total of 5 tiers and 7 parts, which includes a base, 5 tiers (partments), and a top cap. Mission or Arts and Crafts style – straight and simple except for curved pieces on the base and top. Solid parts, except for plywood back boards, with (maple?) veneer on interior faces. Dramatic elm grain.
Elm trees and elm furniture wood have e rarer since the arrival of Dutch Elm Disease into North America in 1928, and its subsequent spread.
There are no sliding glass doors in any of the 5 tiers, and it appears that there never were. Ink stamp onto top of one cross brace: 55387
A great piece for students, as it is easily disassembled, moved and assembled by only one person. As well, very sturdy, so it can hold a large stock of books.
Dimensions: 33” W x 14.25” D x 68” H; Interior depths 13”; Interior heights 11”
Condition: Good to very good vintage condition (7.5 / 10). Water rings and black spots (ink?) on several shelves. Perhaps it had been used to store preserves? On top there is water stain from plant, as well as an ink spot. Very good condition of plywood back boards, with no delamination of plies, however one upper corner broken off on a back board. Minor scratches to the finish.
Completely washed in May 2023. Missing part: elm cross bar on top of one tier, with dimensions (estimates): 7” W x 31.5” L x ¾" Thick. Sides are slanted on cross bars to create tighter fit between tiers.
