Alfred Meakin Plate #43 Cedar Bird, Audubon’s Birds of America.

This square white ironstone luncheon plate was made by the Alfred Meakin potteries, Tunstall, England. It is from their Birds of America dinnerware series. This design is plate “#43 Cedar Bird”, it is reproduced from plate #43 of the Elephant Folio Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. The leaf and flower embossed rim has a scalloped edge. The plate features a central decoration of a male and female Cedar Bird (Cedar Waxwing) perched on cedar branches.
Circa 1945 – 1947. The backstamp reads: Alfred Meakin, England, in green block letters surmounted by a crown (the pottery mark from 1945+). To the right of the pottery mark is the letter “A” (the Wartime Control Mark). Under it is: “PLATE #43” and a banner that reads “BOMBYCILLA CAROLINENSIS”. Under the banner is a yellow oval plaque with a brown scalloped edge, that reads: “REPRODUCED FROM THE ELEPHANT FOLIO EDITION OF AUDUBON’S BIRDS OF AMERICA”. Under the plaque is another banner that reads: “ENDORSED BY NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY NEW YORK”. Under the banner is printed: “CEDAR BIRD”.
8 5/8” in diameter.
Excellent condition, no chips, cracks, or crazing. Some scratches from use, but no loss of colour to the central image.
