“19th-CENTURY BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA”
Edited/Curated by: Lori Pauli and John McElhone
This book is a large exhibition catalog that was published to pany a gallery show organized by the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, in 2011. The show (and the book) highlight the historic British photographs from the Gallery’s collection, with a highlight on some of their newer acquisitions. The catalogue documents the developments in photographic technologies in 19th century Britain; from historically important paper negatives to platinum prints, works by Julia Margaret Cameron, William Henry Fox Talbot, Frederick Evans, Roger Fenton, and Henry Peach Robinson, among others, are beautifully illustrated and examined. There were 68 images that made up this exhibit -- all are listed with their details, and all are fully illustrated. In addition to the very detailed write-ups for each photo, there is also a good Introduction, as well as a long essay on the development of photo printing techniques, which is actually fascinating. These sections are also heavily illustrated. This is a gorgeous catalog overall, and would be an excellent item for anyone interested in the history of photography, British art, etc – and this is particularly valuable as a reference, since after the show was over, many of these works of art went back into storage. Thus, this book is the only chance for the public to see such rarely-shown photographs.
The book is a softcover, and is somewhat larger-format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It was published by The National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, in 2011. It is 176 pages long, and also includes footnotes. The book is used, but is in pristine condition - no writing, no stains or soiling, no missing or torn pages, and a tight spine & clean cover. I have other, similar books up for sale now, so please check them out too! Thanks for bidding!
